From Idea to Craft: The Art of KiRiVOO Jewellery Design

Every KiRiVOO design starts long before it becomes something you can see or hold. It begins as a simple idea, then grows through a careful process of creativity, research, design development, and testing. In this blog post, we’ll take you through how KiRiVOO designs have come to life through 3D printing—from the first idea to the final product. 

Where Inspiration Begins

We enjoy spending time in nature, travel, visit museums, follow innovation, explore trends, and do research. Inspiration can come from many different places and is not always driven by the shape of a design itself.

It can come from the community and customers, nature, architecture, culture, or the way people interact with objects in everyday life. 

Often, it starts with observation. Through research or everyday experiences, a problem or opportunity becomes clear—something that needs to be improved or rethought. This insight often becomes the starting point for a new collection.

The Start of a New Designs 

At KiRiVOO, the creative design process begins with our Creative Director, Ines Karu-Salo, who is responsible for defining and protecting the brand’s creative vision. She is also hands-on when it comes to the visual and functional design of the products. The Creative Director is not just designing individual pieces, but shaping the overall identity, direction, story, and purpose of every collection. In many ways, the CD acts as the bridge between concept, emotion, and product, ensuring every piece feels like it belongs to the same world. 

"When I design, I consider the balance between contemporary elegance and distinctive expression. It is also very important that all styles are comfortable to wear and can be personalised or customised. Many KiRiVOO pieces feature a signature pattern derived from the brand name and eagle logo, which is not only a design element but also a functional one, helping to create products that are lightweight, distinctive, and personal. I also enjoy developing unique shapes and structures that cannot be achieved using traditional jewellery-making techniques, which is why 3D-printing feels like a natural choice for my work. I strive to stand apart by creating 100% recycled fine jewellery made possible through 3D-printing technology."

However, this does not mean that the process is done alone. At KiRiVOO, we work with modern 3D-printing technology, and designing products that are manufactured in this way also requires collaboration with the best specialists in the field.

People Involved in Jewellery Making

Everything starts with a research, idea conceptualisation, and the creation of story, mood, and inspiration boards. Usually, Ines develops these boards for new collections, but she may first brainstorms ideas together with the in-house team and customers.

For example, the idea for the Leaf of Life collection came from Ines, while the Sea Wonders collection was first imagined by Ines’s younger sister and KiRiVOO’s business partner, model, and Operations Executive, Kati Karu. Ines is open to different ideas and carefully selects those that best fit or complement KiRiVOO and its customers' expectations.

From there, the process moves into sketching design boards and early visual development. This stage requires more technical thinking, as the designer translates ideas into detailed forms while following the brand’s design guidelines, goals and expectations. These visualisations are created by Ines Karu-Salo or in collaboration with jewellery designer Kati Kask from Cloud Factory (CF).

CF also supports KiRiVOO with computer-aided design (CAD) software and technical designers needed for prototyping and direct metal 3D printing. Once the CAD design is ready, the first samples are 3D printed and then tested. 

The design is then refined through multiple CAD iterations until it matches Ines’s vision and passes quality testing. Depending on the style, the journey from concept to finished product can vary significantly. More unique and functional pieces can take anywhere from several months to over a year to develop into a high-quality finished product.

Every KiRiVOO piece begins as an idea and evolves through curiosity, research, and careful design development to a unique artwork. From the first spark of inspiration to CAD modelling, 3D printing, and final testing, each step plays an important role in shaping the final result.

While every design follows the same process, each piece is different. Some require more experimentation, refinement, and time—but this is part of what allows us to create jewellery that feels thoughtful, distinctive, and meaningful.
